Chromoly Plate

This Chromoly flat steel has a smooth surface finish. The primary difference between hot and cold rolled 4130 sheet / plate material is cosmetic, the mechanical strength is very similar.

Our Chromoly sheet and plate is aircraft grade 4130 condition N (normalized), spec AMS-6345-C. This alloy steel is perfect for fabricating high strength custom tabs and brackets.

It is widely used in aviation and racing because of it's strength, weld-ability and ease of fabrication.

Available in a large selection of thicknesses, in several convenient pre-cut sizes to meet your project size requirements.

Due to how steel plate is produced it is not perfectly flat. The edges are either sheared or plasma cut, the heat generated by cutting does create a crispy thin layer of hardness. It is recommended to grind off the edge hardness before attempting to cut this material - this will help reduce the potential of prematurely dulling the teeth of common cutting tools.

Note: Cut tolerance on this material is typically + or - 1/4".

Welding should always be performed by a qualified welder.

 Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why does this material cost more than others?
A: We offer only high quality Certified Chromoly Plate, we do not make substitutions with other perceived to be similar materials or with off shore look-a-likes that aren't the same quality or strength.

Q: If the material is Hot Rolled should I sand off the surface scale before welding?
A: It is always a good practice to clean the areas to be welded of any material to reduce the potential introduction of impurities from effecting the final strength of the weld.

Q: Is it necessary to normalize a component or chassis made of Chromoly material after welding?
A: Some applications may or may not require normalizing. This is a complex topic and can't be adequately addressed in a short paragraph. Please feel free to call our tech team for complete answers to this topic.

Q: Can I weld Mild steel to Chromoly steel?
A: Yes, it is a very common practice. With the proper filler rod and procedure, these two alloys can be easily welded together.

PRO TIP:  How to bend Chromoly Plate

When cold forming Chromoly Plate several factors will determine the outcome - the thickness, grain direction, bend radius and degree of bend can influence if this material can successfully be bent at room temperature without cracking.  It is recommended to test bend sample pieces and inspect for cracks.  Make necessary adjustments until a satisfactory result is achieved.

Heating this material for bending can change the strength and is not recommended with out proper and strict control of the process.
